'Juneteenth'
celebrates slaves emancipation

This weekend Long
Beach will host the Juneteenth Jubilee 2002 Gospel Celebration
at Martin Luther King Jr. Park from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Juneteenth is a special occasion within the African-American
community in the United States because it commemorates the
day that Union soldiers came to Texas and were read General
Order Number three by Major General Gordon Granger two and
a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made
official.
"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance
with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States,
all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of
rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves,
and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes
that between employer and free laborer," according to
the Juneteenth Web site.
The celebration is growing in popularity according to Juneteenth.com
and emphasizes African-American freedom, education and achievement.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be filled with carnival amusements
such as a moon bounce and face painting. There will be a family-style
barbecue with traditional foods.
Saturday will host entertainers Donald Taylor and One Voice,
the Family & Friends Gospel Ensemble, Praise, Infusion,
and a capella groups Gospel Ensemble and Ministry of Song.
There will also
be local church choirs. Musical performances will be from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The park is located at 1950 Lemon St. For further information
contact the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department
at (562) 570-4405.
