Incumbent
set to win mayoral race
Staff Reports
The Long Beach
City Elections will not be official with hard numbers for
another week or two, but unofficial results show incumbent
Beverly O'Neill in the lead for the office of mayor with 16,
469 votes tallied as of Wednesday morning.
Dan Baker was behind
O'Neill with 12, 702 votes and Norm Ryan was last with 6,
010 votes.
Both O'Neill and
Ryan were write-in candidates for the election and Baker was
the only name on the ballot. O'Neill, who served her last
term, was not allowed to re-run as an official candidate but
qualified as a write-in.
Baker's campaign
focused on several issues currently facing Long Beach like
gangs and crime. In his candidate statement on the City of
Long Beach web site, Baker said he wanted to "significantly
increases the number of police officers to expand bike and
foot patrols in all of our neighborhoods."
O'Neill focused
her campaign on instructing voters on the regulations for
writing her name on the ballot.
Although the final
unofficial count is going to be tallied June 6, several thousand
votes will still need to be counted during next week. These
votes include absentee ballots and provisional ballots cast
at the polls.
