Long Beach artist portrays women

By Ronea Alger
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Eclectic artist Margie Darrow-Stretz does pen- and ink-drawings and paintings of women, leprechauns, mermaids, cupids and animals.  Her latest paintings of women can now be found at The Coffee Cup Café in Long Beach.

According to Darrow-Stretz the 20 works devoted to the portrayal of women, through cartoon and Cubism styles on display expresses its own personality and has an imaginative look at the changing face of the girl next door.

“I believe there are many images of women - from the gothic look to the modern icon,” said Darrow-Stretz. “All women are unique in their own beauty and personality.  I try to express that uniqueness in all my paintings.”

The Long Beach native primarily paints works with acrylic paint on wood, Masointe and canvas.

“I try to express my opinion in all of my work,”  Darrow-Stretz said, who paints commercial illustrations, children books, abstract paintings, people, places and animals.

“I draw from the experiences of life,” Darrow-Stretz said.  “I try to give personality to the figures and characters and emotions to the abstracts by adding humor.”

Her recent projects include writing and illustrating a children’s book titled “Big Plum-Little Peach,” and collaborated effort for a second children’s book “Angry Etta.”  She is co-owner and designer for the “Little Sister” line of clothing.

Her favorite painting is “Smoke,” which is a French postcard painting.  The painting represents a lady smoking a pipe and wearing a top hat, bow tie and low-cut dress.

“I like this painting because it shows the more earthy type of woman,” Darrow-Stretz said.

The Coffee Cup Café is located at 3734 East Fourth Street in Long Beach.  The paintings are on display Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Sept. 15.
