The Long Beach
Outdoor Film Festival and the live music concert series are
coming to the Marina Greens and to the Queen Mary this
weekend.
According to Amanda Jones, executive producer for the film
series, films will be shown on a 20 by 30-foot screen in the
Marina Greens. Viewers may bring blankets and low chairs to
enjoy the film out on the grass, Jones said.
The first film to be shown is “The Wizard of Oz” and two of
the original actors who played munchkins in the film will
be there in costume. Jones said the next out door film will
be “Austin Powers the Spy Who Shagged Me” and they will have
an Austin Powers impersonator. The following movies will be
“Casablanca,” “Pearl Harbor” and “Shrek.”
The “Pearl Harbor” film showing will be a Sept. 11 commemorative
event. According to Jones, the National Guard will be there
along with World War II uniforms and vehicles, which will
be on display. Jones said National Guard General, Richard
Pierce, will be dressed to impersonate General George Patton.
“We encourage the audience to dress in the theme of the movie,”
Jones said.
The event is sponsored by Partners of Parks, a non-profit
organization raising money for gang prevention, youth literacy
and senior programs, according to Darren Held, executive director
of the film series.
The event is free to the public but a donation of $5 is recommended
and VIP passes can be purchased which will alleviate time
spent waiting in line along with other benefits, Held said.

An event for music lovers will begin Saturday. A new concert
series is coming aboard the historic Queen Mary.
The performances will be in the Art Deco salons of the ship.
Scheduled performers are Howard Mac and his Orchestra on Aug.
17 and Diamond Dave Somerville will perform his 1957 Rock
and Roll Bus show on Aug. 31. More show dates will be announced,
according to Robin Wachner, Queen Mary public relations manager.
“We really think that the artists that we’ve chosen will have
a lot of appeal,” Wachner said.
Artists will perform two shows each night at 8 p.m. and 10
p.m. Tickets for a three course dinner, served at 7 p.m.,
can be purchased along with tickets for the 8 p.m. show for
a full evening aboard the Queen Mary.
Wachner said she is optimistic that the concert series will
have a good turn out and hopes to draw audiences from Los
Angeles, Orange County and Riverside County.
“The Queen Mary is a really unique venue in which to see a
concert,” Wachner said.
