Sea
Festival keeps shore busy
By Tanya Dellaca

Celebrating the
shoreline of our city the Long Beach International Sea Festival
will host its annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest on Saturday,
Aug. 17.
“The Sea Festival dates back 70 years,” Event Coordinator
Kelly Barker said. “And represents a conglomeration of events
scheduled throughout August.”
Beginning at 9 a.m. next to the Belmont Plaza Pool, teams
consisting of 10 members each will begin molding the wet sand
into different works of art.
Contestants will compete for $100 cash prizes in the creativity,
design and depiction of title categories. For children and
teens competing in the “Kool Kids Kategory” a gift basket
will be the prize.
“We are celebrating the ocean; bringing the community together
in doing that,” Barker said.
The event is free to spectators and, in previous years, the
number of guests reached into the thousands, Barker said.
The awards ceremony will follow the sculpting at 2 p.m. and
the completed sculptures will be available for viewing from
2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The band Identity Crisis will be performing live and the outdoor
pool will be open for guests.
Other International Sea Festival events on that day the will
include the Over the Line Softball Tournament on the beach
at the Granada launch ramp and on Aug. 23 a Model Boat Regatta
at the Colorado Lagoon.
The Softball Tournament is free to spectators and will feature
three divisions, men’s, women’s and co-ed.
On Aug. 24, from sunrise to sunset, the Tiki Beach Festival
and Polynesian Spectacular will be held on the beach at the
Granada launch ramp. This event will feature a luau, live
bands, canoe and catamaran rides as well as a children’s play
area.
More information on events may be obtained by calling the
International Sea Festival Hotline at (562) 570-8920.
