Art gallery showcases CSULB alumna

By Heather Clarke
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Artistic Edge, a Long Beach framing shop and art gallery on Fourth Street, supports local artists including Cal State Long Beach Alumnus, Kirsten Nielson Anderson.

Kristina Suhr, owner of Artistic Edge, holds five shows a year in her gallery that run for 60 days each. Many artists submit their work to her and she is always finding artists in the area, Suhr said.

“I line them up so they’re all strong but different” Suhr said.

Anderson is the current artist on display in Suhr’s gallery. Her paintings are done in plein-aire style, which evolved from the French impressionist style when painters after they saw the different quality of light in California and wanted to capture the environment, Anderson said.

A graduate from Occidental College, Anderson took illustration courses at CSULB while earning her degree in radiation therapy there. She supports herself mainly through her art, while working one day a week in radiation therapy.

Anderson produces commissioned art for large restaurant chains such as California Pizza Kitchen, Marie Callendar’s and El Torito.

She is also a resident artist at two galleries, Studio Seven and Portico. Her plein-aire paintings are of the Long Beach and Newport Beach coast’s as well as her travels to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and China. Her art will be on display until Sept. 14.

Suhr has been in the framing business in Long Beach for eight years. She moved and expanded to include a gallery in 2000.

The opening for Anderson’s works on July 20 was Suhr’s 12th opening. She said seven pieces were sold. She had such a good turn out that other artists called her requesting to have shows of their own at her gallery, Suhr said.

Suhr started from the ground up to create her shop and gallery in an abandoned building, she said.

“It was very cool,” Suhr said. “It was laid out perfectly to be a frame shop and gallery.”

Suhr does everything on her own, cutting the wood, glass and mats in a workroom which is separated from the raised gallery floor.

She obtained her art degree from Cal State Chico and considers framing to be her current art. Suhr said she puts a lot of emphasis on asking people about their home decor and personal style when framing something for her clients.
