Outdoor
concert keeps crowd grooving at Sorptimist House
By Miguel Lopez
Summer On-line Forty-Niner
Flattop Tom and
his Jump Cats jammed everything from swing and boogie-woogie
to blues tunes Saturday night at Cal State Long Beach’s Concerts
in the Grove series at the Soroptmist House terrace.
The band cranked
out upbeat songs for nearly two hours that kept fans from
ages 7 to 70 shaking and jiving. Flattop Tom and his Jump
Cats played a solid set that had the almost full capacity
crowd moving on a unseasonably cool summer night. Flattop
Tom’s energetic singing and harmonica playing kept the audience
hooked throughout the entire performance.
“I like their catchy
music,” said Long Beach resident Yvette Gonzalez. “I’ve never
seen them play before but the songs are great. I especially
enjoyed how they switched their songs from upbeat to slower,
so the crowd wouldn’t tire from dancing.”
Even alumni volunteers
danced until the last song of the evening. Along with the
dancing and mingling of alumni and friends, people were able
to enjoy their own food and drinks. Gates opened an hour and
a half before the concert so that the audience could picnic
before and during the concert.
The second outdoor
concert of the four part concert series was a success but
according to Alumni Association Director Gay Arakawa, the
first concert soldout.
“People loved last
week’s band, the Authentics, and we were sold out for quite
a while before the concert,” Arakawa said. “You couldn’t walk
in between the tables. At least today there seems to be some
space between tables.”
The Concerts in
the Grove series has been a fundraiser put on by the Alumni
Association for 26 years, with each year being a success in
bringing quality music with a fun experience.
The third concert
scheduled for August 10 is sold out, but tickets for the August
17 show are still available. The next concert will feature
the very popular band, Murfy’s Law. Also, Floyd and the Flyboys,
will make their return to the campus’ Soroptimist House, performing
on August 17.
Along with great
music, raffle drawings were held to give out 20 prizes. The
prizes ranged from dinner at Claim Jumpers restaurant and
bottles of wine to Anaheim Angels tickets. All the raffle
prizes were donated to raise money for the Alumni Association.
