Big Island food spices up L.B.

By Miguel Lopez
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach students do not have to travel to the big island for great Hawaiian food; now  they only have to trek to Long Beach.

The L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, 141 E. Willow St., in the Wrigley Marketplace provides great food for a good price. The entrees offered are seafood, chicken, pork, beef, saimin (noodle soup), musubi, burgers and sandwiches.  Plate lunches can be either purchased in mini size for $3.99 or regular for $5.99. Both sizes include two scoops of steamed rice, one scoop of macaroni salad and drinks are separate.

The menu includes a huge selection of food not normally found in typical Long Beach restaurants. For the average CSULB student, this restaurant can satisfy a big and diverse appetite with its wide selection. Everything from fried shrimp, garlic shrimp, chicken katsu, beef curry, Hawaiian barbecue beef and salads can be found at this restaurant.

After debating between lemon chicken and the mixed barbecue plate, I decided to try the barbecue mix plate, which includes Hawaiian barbecue beef, chicken, short ribs and of course steamed rice and macaroni salad. Paying $6.29 plus tax, I thought it was a great deal but when I picked up my order I saw that it was an even better deal. The plate was stacked high with generous portions. The three barbecue items were freshly cooked, noticeable by the sizzling on my plate. The beef, chicken and short ribs were very tender and had a great barbecue taste.

Other than in Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and California have been part of the expansion of L&L. The Long Beach location is the 10th restaurant in California and the first in Long Beach. The Hawaiian food brings an excellent taste and diversity to the ‘burger and fries’ infested Long Beach, with the Hawaiian food costing almost as much as a burger combo. CSULB students can savor this great barbecue without doing much damage to their wallets.
