Grove concerts back at the beach

By Miguel Lopez
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

The variety of swing, R&B and oldies music is scheduled to rock the Soroptimist House terrace for the 26th summer starting July 13.

The Cal State Long Beach Alumni Association has been keeping busy over the normally slow summer in preparing for its fundraiser concert, the Concerts in the Grove series. The association leads many campus events including Homecoming, Kaleidoscope and with graduation.

“Most of the concerts have sold out in the past, and the first concert for this year is already sold out,” said association director, Gay Arakawa. “This is the 26th time we had a concert and they keep on getting better”

Scheduled to play the four-part concert series are bands that are diverse in sound, but alike in quality. Returning for a sixth concert are cover-band Tommy Tassi and the Authentics is scheduled to open the summer concerts July 13. Eight-piece big band Flattop Tom and his Jump Cats will play July 20. Also making a return to the beach on August 10 is Classic rock band Murfy’s Law. R&B and Blues band, Floyd and his FlyBoys will conclude the concert series on August 17.

“Last year I went to one of the concerts and I had a lot of fun,” said CSULB student Jessica Vivian. “I plan to go again this summer to a least one more show.”

Along with the good music the audience can bring their own food and beverages for their enjoyment before the concert. Raffle drawings for donated gifts will also be part of the concert festivities. For ticket information or questions the Alumni Association can be contacted at (562) 985-5488.
