Carpenter Center’s upcoming events

By Justin Diemert
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Subscription packages are now being sold at the Carpenter Center box office for the 2002/2003 season. There is a show for everyone, from exciting musicals to dramatic operas

The signature series features Kathy Mattea, a country singer who has a background in folk music and George Shearing, who will perform a tribute to Mel Torme, who is one of the greats within the field of jazz. KLON FM 88.1 also has a line up of great musicians looking to share their music with jazz lovers.

Take a step into Club Carpenter and can see artists Davis Gaines, who won critical acclaim for his role in “Phantom of the Opera” and Patrick Cassidy, who has just got ten off tour as Radames in “Aida” and has a long background in musical theater. Before Christmas there is a chance to see Ray and Jodi Benson. Ray is best known for his role in the touring group “My One and Only,” Jodi is known for the voice of “The Little Mermaid.”

The Carpenter Center also brings the Joe Goode performance group and the Grupo Corpo dance companies. Different world dance groups from Hawaii and Switzerland are among the other performers. There are various cultural musicians bringing their experience and music to the stage as well. Rick Thomas is part of the Family Matters series as he brings his magic to the stage. “Spirit for the Holidays” and Tom Chapin in Concert is just a few of the many acts scheduled for their new season.

If musical theater is your interest then why not see great shows like, “Forever Plaid” and “Mame.” “Crazy for You” and “Me and My Girl” are among just a few of the other shows coming to the stage here at Cal State Long Beach. The South Coast Chorale brings music to life with “Backstage Cabaret,” “Hooray for the Holidays” featuring holiday tunes and “Summer of ’69” where you take a trip back through time and remember where you were that summer.

Cal State Long Beach College of the Arts is a part of the magic as well. The dance department, theater department and the music department all have showcases to provide the students to perform their talents for audiences in a professional venue.

Prices of the subscriptions range from $30 to $130 and if you only want to see one show you have the ability to purchase individual tickets. The ticket box office is located at the Carpenter Center facing Atherton Street and is available to take your requests Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Give them a call and experience all they have to offer next season.
