49ers
win, await Anteaters
By Sarah Duffy

The Long Beach
State women's tennis team improved to 18-1 on the season after
racking up three victories over the weekend and increased
its chances of playing in the Big West Conference tournament
as the top-seeded team.
The 49ers beat visiting Portland, 6-1, Friday in a nonconference
match, and then defeated UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, Saturday and
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 5-2, Sunday in Big West road matches
to set up a grudge match against UC Irvine Saturday at the
49er Campus Courts.
LBSU is 7-0 in the Big West and ranked 60th in the nation,
while UC Irvine is 6-0 in conference matches and ranked No.
54. Last year LBSU lost, 4-3, in a close match at UC Irvine.
Earlier this season, UC Irvine lost to Loyola Marymount, a
team that The Beach beat, 5-2, during this season.
After a 7-5, 6-1 victory Friday against Portland's Courtney
Perkins -- the first of three matches in row that No. 1 player
Anastasia Dvornikova and her LBSU teammates would play over
the weekend -- Dvornikova took a pragmatic approach while
looking ahead to the Big West Tournament.
"It is kind of tough," she said, "but it's
good too, because that's what's going to happen when we play
our Big West Conference [tournament] matches three days in
a row. So that's going to be a good thing for us."
