Softball drops two against Titans

By Laurisa Franklin
On-line Forty-Niner

The Long Beach State softball team has its nine-game winning streak snapped by losing both ends of a Big West doubleheader to host Cal State Fullerton Saturday.

The Beach traveled to a packed house to face its longtime rival for first place in the Big West. The Titans increased their national-best winning streak to 28 consecutive games and improved their record to 37-9 overall and 11-0 in the Big West.  The 49ers dropped to 30-15 and 8-3.

In game one, The 49ers were undone by a rough third inning and lost, 2-0. Amanda Hocking led off the third with a home run, and an RBI single by Jodie Cox gave the Titans the two-run advantage.

The 49ers tried to edge back in the fourth loading the bases, but were unable to push a run across. Lindsey Knoff (12-10) gave up the two runs and five other hits to take the loss. Titan hurler Gina Oaks improved her record to 16-2 with the victory.

In game two, The Beach lost, 5-0, after staff ace Medredith Cervenka (17-4) gave up three Titan home runs. Senior Yasmin Mossadeghi was responsible for four of the five runs for the Titans. Mossadeghi struck first in the second inning with a solo home run to left and the Titans four more runs in the fifth to break the game open.
