Tennis keeps winning, await Anteaters

Staff reports

The Long Beach State womenÕs tennis team beat Portland, 6-1, Friday and UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, Saturday to run its record to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in the Big West Conference.

With the victory over conference foe UCSB Ñ the Portland match was nonconference Ñ the 49ers set up a probable first-place showdown with UC Irvine Saturday at the 49er Campus Courts.

"If everything goes the way we think it should this weekend, then [the match against UCI] will definitely be the showdown for the No. 1 seed," Jenny Hilt, LBSU coach, said.

Alena Dvornikova, Laura Thomas, Cheryl Kindred and Claudia Argumedo won their singles matches in both contests, and The BeachÕs doubles teams won all six sets in the matches. Argumedo is now 11-0 on the season, and Kindred and Kelly ChanÕs two wins in doubles improved their record to 19-0.

In other Beach athletics:

Beach streak stopped Ñ The LBSU womenÕs water polo team dropped an 11-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation decision to Cal Saturday in Berkeley that snapped the 49ersÕ five-game winning streak. Ashley Richardson scored two goals and Bri Hawkins had 11 saves in net for LBSU, which fell to 11-8 overall, 4-4 in the MPSF.

The loss came on the heels of The BeachÕs 10-6 MPSF win over Pacific in Stockton Friday. Drue Wawrzynski, Angelica Garcia, Roberta Stewart and Robyn Gordin each scored two goals for the 49ers, who led, 5-2, at halftime. Hawkins made 12 saves in the victory.

Dirtbags rip Waves Ñ Nick Covarrubias went five for five with three RBIs, and Jeremy Reed and Chris Wright homered as LBSU pounded out 21 hits in a 16-1 drubbing of Pepperdine in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Blair Field.

Wright hit a two-run shot in the third inning and Reed hit a grand slam during a seven-run ninth inning. In all, eight Dirtbags had at least two hits each.

Jered Weaver (4-2) picked up his fourth win in a row, going five scoreless innings.

The victory was fifth in a row for the Dirtbags, who have won 13 of their last 16. LBSU is now 20-9 on the season.
