Tennis keeps winning,
await Anteaters

The Long Beach
State womenÕs tennis team beat Portland, 6-1, Friday and UC
Santa Barbara, 5-2, Saturday to run its record to 17-1 overall
and 6-0 in the Big West Conference.
With the victory
over conference foe UCSB Ñ the Portland match was nonconference
Ñ the 49ers set up a probable first-place showdown with UC
Irvine Saturday at the 49er Campus Courts.
"If everything
goes the way we think it should this weekend, then [the match
against UCI] will definitely be the showdown for the No. 1
seed," Jenny Hilt, LBSU coach, said.
Alena Dvornikova,
Laura Thomas, Cheryl Kindred and Claudia Argumedo won their
singles matches in both contests, and The BeachÕs doubles
teams won all six sets in the matches. Argumedo is now 11-0
on the season, and Kindred and Kelly ChanÕs two wins in doubles
improved their record to 19-0.

Beach streak
stopped Ñ The LBSU womenÕs water polo team dropped an
11-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation decision to Cal Saturday
in Berkeley that snapped the 49ersÕ five-game winning streak.
Ashley Richardson scored two goals and Bri Hawkins had 11
saves in net for LBSU, which fell to 11-8 overall, 4-4 in
the MPSF.
The loss came on
the heels of The BeachÕs 10-6 MPSF win over Pacific in Stockton
Friday. Drue Wawrzynski, Angelica Garcia, Roberta Stewart
and Robyn Gordin each scored two goals for the 49ers, who
led, 5-2, at halftime. Hawkins made 12 saves in the victory.
Dirtbags rip
Waves Ñ Nick Covarrubias went five for five with three
RBIs, and Jeremy Reed and Chris Wright homered as LBSU pounded
out 21 hits in a 16-1 drubbing of Pepperdine in a nonconference
baseball game Wednesday at Blair Field.
Wright hit a two-run
shot in the third inning and Reed hit a grand slam during
a seven-run ninth inning. In all, eight Dirtbags had at least
two hits each.
Jered Weaver (4-2)
picked up his fourth win in a row, going five scoreless innings.
The victory was
fifth in a row for the Dirtbags, who have won 13 of their
last 16. LBSU is now 20-9 on the season.
