Long Beach State
track and field won both the men's and women's team events,
and several 49ers set records at the 10th annual Big West
Challenge Cup Saturday at Jack Rose Track.
The men won the team event, 208-170, over second-place Cal
State Fullerton. UC Santa Barbara was third with 149 points
and UC Irvine fourth at 117. Jon O'Neil set meet records in
the shot put (62-3 1/4) and discus (189-3), and Rashaad Johnson
and Jimmy Camilo also doubled for LBSU. Johnson placed first
in the 200 (21.38) and 400 (47.68), and Camilo won the 110
hurdles (14.67) and pole vault (16-4 3/4).
The women nipped UCI, 187-183, to win the title. CSF was third
at 138 and UCSB fourth at 129. LBSU's Gladys Iwuaba won the
triple jump with a school- and meet-record effort of 40-4
3/4. Fellow 49ers Serena Boykin and Stephanie Sampson also
set meet records, Boykin in the shot put (45-8) and Sampson
in the hammer throw (166-2). Sampson also took first in the
discus (145-6).
The Beach won 17 events in the event. Here's a complete list
