Jerz, O'Neil break records at MPSF championships

Staff reports

Strong showings by several Long Beach State track and field athletes highlighted competition Friday and Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Connie Jerz and Jon O'Neil broke school records Friday. Jerz reached a height of 13'3 1/2" in the pole vault to break her own school record for the third time this season. Jerz placed fifth overall.

O'Neil finished second in the weight throw Friday with a toss of 66'11 1/4", breaking his own school record for the second time this year. O'Neil came back Saturday with a throw of 60'11 1/2" in the shotput competition to place fifth in that event.

Matt Bates also shined Saturday, finishing second in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.83 -- .32 seconds behind winner Nick Thornton of UCLA. Emily Forsythe was also strong Saturday, placing fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5'3".

The men's distance medley team placed third Saturday with a time of 10:26.58.

LBSU finished eighth overall in the women's team competition and ninth on the men's side. The women's finish was its highest ever in the conference indoor championships.
In other Beach sports:

Gauchos cool the 49ers -- The red-hot Long Beach State women's basketball team ran into an even hotter UC Santa Barbara squad Friday, losing, 72-56, in a Big West Conference contest at Santa Barbara.

Ekuah Ramsey scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Crystal Givens and Tamara Inoue scored 13 points each for the 49ers (14-11, 10-4 Big West), who were undone by poor shooting (28.2 percent for the game) and the potent UCSB frontcourt combination of Lindsay Taylor (19 points, eight rebounds), Kristen Mann (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Kayte Christensen (12 points, seven rebounds).

The Gauchos (19-5, 13-0) had won 15 games in a row as of Friday and stopped The Beach's three-game winning streak.

Marbach leads split in Hawaii -- LBSU men's volleyball beat Hawaii, 30-26, 26-30, 36-34, 31-29, Wednesday and dropped a 30-18, 30-22, 30-25 decision to the Wahine Friday in MPSF action.

Nick Marbach had 23 kills and Tim May added 13 kills and five blocks Wednesday for the 49ers, who hit .336 for the match and never lower than .303 in any of the four games.

Marbach again led LBSU in kills Friday with 17, but the Beach couldn't overcome the hot-hitting Wahine, who hit over .400 in each of the three games.

The 49ers are now 5-5 in the MPSF and 7-9 overall. Hawaii, ranked third in the nation, is 7-1 in the MPSF, 10-3 overall.

Beach wins, loses in tournament -- The 49er women's water polo team beat UC Santa Barbara, 9-5, and later lost to Stanford, 8-3, Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.

LBSU's Roberta Stewart scored four goals against UC Santa Barbara, and the 49ers defense shut out the Gauchos in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.

The Beach didn't fare as well against Stanford, the nation's top-ranked team. Angelica Garcia scored two goals for LBSU.
