Dirtbag pitchers dominate

By Dwight Flenniken
On-line Forty-Niner

Long Beach State beat Arkansas twice in nonconference baseball action at Blair Field by scores of 7-1 Friday and 4-0 Saturday.

In Saturday's game, Dirtbag starter Daniel Eisentrager pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings on his way to his third victory without a loss this season.

Josh Alliston came in relief of Eisentrager, and allowed one hit and one walk in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Neil Jamison closed the victory with a one-hit ninth inning.

Todd Jennings started the scoring with a one-out home run in the bottom of the first and also stopped a Razorback rally by cutting down Michael Conners on an attempted steal.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jeremy Reed, the 49ers' hottest hitter, hit an RBI single that scored Kevin Randel from second and gave the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.

Arkansas threatened in the seventh inning with Alliston on the mound.

Dirtbag coach Mike Weathers decided to leave Alliston in the game with runners at first and third and two outs, and the reliever rewarded his coach's decision when he forced Arkansas' Luke Weatherford to hit a fly ball that ended the rally.

The Dirtbags put the game away with two runs in the eighth inning on a leadoff home run by second baseman Nick Orlandos, and a single and steal by Chris Wright led to an RBI single by Nick Covarrubias.

In Friday's game, a three-run second inning following a costly Arkansas error proved enough for Dirtbag starter Abe Alvarez, who allowed only one earned run in 6 1/3 innings to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.

"I was pumped up for this game," Alvarez said.

"I had a lot of confidence in myself."

Alvarez had a career-high six strikeouts and allowed only six hits on 99 pitches. At one point, he retired eight batters in a row and has not allowed a walk this season.

In the second inning of a scoreless game, Jennings and Randel reached base on back-to-back singles with two outs.

A subsequent error by Arkansas shortstop Tigger Lyles loaded the bases and Reed shot a double into the gap, clearing the bases.

LBSU built a 4-0 lead in the third when Paul McAnulty reached first on a second error by Lyles, stole second base and was driven home on a double by Mike Hofius.

The Dirtbags blew the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A double by McAnulty, a single by Hofius and a triple by Jennings help spur the rally. The Dirtbags had 16 hits in the lopsided victory.

LBSU reliever Joey Pace entered the game and retired eight of the nine batters he faced.

The 49ers closed out the series Sunday afternoon at Blair Field. Look for the game story in Tuesday's On-line Forty-Niner.
