Beach splits with No. 1 UCLA

Staff reports

A split never felt so good.

Long Beach State rallied to beat No. 1 UCLA, 3-2, in nine innings before falling, 10-0, in a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Natalie Walker hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Nicole Spencer with the winning run in the ninth inning of the first game. The victory was The Beach's first  over UCLA since 1998 and the Bruins first nonconference loss since since 2000.

Freshman pitcher Meredith Cervenka was again key for LBSU, going the distance to improve her record to 9-1. Cervenka gave up 10 hits and walked six, but proved to be clutch by stranding 13 Bruin runners, including runners on second and third in the top of the ninth.

The 49ers were down, 2-0, entering the bottom of the sixth before The Beach put runners on second and third. Darcey Brown then hit a soft liner that went for a double and scored the tying runs.

Arleigh Thorp had two hits and a run scored in the first game for the Beach, which extended its winning streak to 10 games with the victory.

The streak was stopped in its tracks in the second game as UCLA (17-1) exploded for 10 runs and Bruin pitcher Keira Goerl held the 49ers to two hits, both off Thorp's bat.

The 49ers (15-5) will next be in action beginning Friday at the Arizona Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
