Weaver
strikes it big for Dirtbags
Staff reports
Jered Weaver struck
out 12 batters in six innings while giving up only one hit
and one earned run to lead Long Beach State to a 10-2 nonconference
baseball victory over Pepperdine Tuesday at Blair Field.
The strikeout total was a career high for Weaver, who improved
his record to 6-4.
Weaver did give up a run in the first inning, but the Dirtbags
sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning and scored
five runs, then came back with five more in the fourth to
take a commanding 10-1 lead.
Hot-hitting Paul McAnulty came through for LBSU again, hitting
a two-run triple in the first inning, and Nick Covarrubias
and Chris Wright had two hits and drove in two runs for the
Dirtbags.
Jeremy Reed and Todd Jennings also had two hits for LBSU.
Jennings, playing in his first game since straining an MCL
nearly five weeks ago, hit a solo home run to lead off the
fourth.
McAnulty, who was named Big West Conference Player of the
Week Monday, was also honored Tuesday when he was named the
National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball
Writer's Association. McAnulty leads LBSU with a .371 batting
average, eight home runs, 48 RBIs and a .648 slugging percentage.
LBSU begins a three-game series Friday against Big West foe
Pacific before clashing with rival Cal State Fullerton in
a three-game set beginning May 24 that will close the regular
season. All six games will be at Blair Field.
