Four 49ers gain Big West honors

The Long Beach State softball squad may have missed the NCAA Championships this season, but the team's strong season didn't go unrecognized by the Big West Conference.

Four LBSU players were named All-Big West Conference Tuesday: Seniors Christina Zepeda and Natalie Walker, and freshman Meredith Cervenka were named to the second team, and sophomore Arleigh Thorp was named honorable mention.

Cervenka compiled a 20-8 record and 1.48 ERA on the mound for the 49ers. Cervenka also struck out 151 batters, the second-highest total in LBSU history.

Thorp led the 49ers with a .303 batting average, 25 RBIs and a .432 slugging percentage. Thorp split time between left field and catcher, and committed only three errors for a .984 fielding percentage.

Walker, the 49ers's starting centerfielder, was second with a .292 batting average and scored a team-high 30 runs. Walker also hit .362 with runners in scoring position and drove in 19 runs.

Zepeda, who started at third base and was LBSU's leadoff batter, scored 28 runs and hit .263 this season. Zepeda had a team-high 164 assists at third base this year and finished her career with the most runs in LBSU history at 112.
