McAnulty Big West's best

Staff reports

Paul McAnulty's watershed season got even better Monday when he was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week.

The Long Beach State first baseman/designated hitter hit .467 with three home runs and nine RBIs while scoring six runs to help the Dirtbags to a 3-1 record. McAnulty had a 1.067 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage during the stretch.

McAnulty has a .374 average this season with eight homers and 46 RBIs, and has hit .516 with 12 runs scored and 17 RBIs over the last two weeks.

In other Beach athletics:

Three honored for The Beach -- The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation handed out its conference awards for women's water polo Monday and LBSU was honored like never before.

Freshman Roberta Stewart was named to the All-MPSF first team, sophomore Angelica Garcia garnered honorable mention accolades and LBSU coach Rick Azevedo was named co-Coach of the Year.

LBSU women's water polo had never had more than one player named all-conference or had a coach of the year.

The Beach finished with a 19-13 record, the most wins in school history, and closed the season ranked No. 4 in the nation. Stewart led the 49ers with 65 goals and 37 steals, and is the first LBSU player to be selected to the first team. Garcia was second for The Beach with 53 goals.

Munoz to play for USA -- Freshman men's volleyball player Paul Munoz has been selected to the USA Junior National Team that will play this summer.

The team consists of 18 players and will play at the NORCEA Zone Championships to be held at the end of July in Canada.
