Dirtbags lose wild one

Staff reports

A ninth-inning rally fell short as Long Beach State lost to host Cal State Northridge, 10-8, Sunday in a Big West Conference baseball game.

The Dirtbags built leads of 4-0 and 5-3 before CSUN scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 10-5 advantage.

Jeremy Reed opened the ninth with a solo homer, his fifth. Following a Paul McAnulty base hit, Nick Covarrubias hit his third home run of the season to cut the deficit to 10-8. LBSU then put runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to push any more runs across.

Covarrubias finished with four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Brad Davis had three hits and Kevin Randel hit a three-run homer in the third for the Dirtbags.

LBSU fell to 30-19 overall and 11-7 in the Big West after the loss. The conference leading Matadors improved to 36-15, 16-5 with the victory.

The Dirtbags begin a seven-game home stand at Blair Field to close the regular season. The stretch begins tonight with a nonconference game against Pepperdine before LBSU closes the weekend with a three-game series against Big West rival Pacific.
