Beach takes five
at two

Several Long Beach
State track athletes took part in two different events Saturday
in preparation for the upcoming Big West Championships.
At the Claremont Classic in Claremont, The Beach produced
four winners. For the women, Gladys Iwuaba won the triple
jump at 38-11 1/2 and Serena Boykin won the shot put at 49-9
1/4. On the men's side, Jon O'Neil won the shot put 62-7 3/4
and Cory Lobel won the discus at 180-9.
Gina Londano was the only winner for The Beach at the Occidental
Invitational in Los Angeles, winning the women's 100 high
hurdles in 14.77.
Four LBSU athletes placed second at the events: Sarah Muilenburg
(Claremont, women's triple jump, 37-8 1/2); O'Neil (Claremont,
discus, 180-9); Meghan Atkinson (Occidental, 400 meters, 56.46);
and Mike Akili (Occidental, 200 meters, 21.72).
The Beach's Stephanie Sampson competed in the hammer throw
at both events, finishing third (181-3) at Occidental and
seventh (170-6) at Claremont.
The Big West Championships begin Wednesday at UC Irvine.
