Dirtbags turn
two on CSUN
Staff reports
Paul McAnulty drove
in six runs in two games, and Abe Alvarez and Daniel Eisentrager
both came up with strong performances on the mound as Long
Beach State beat host Cal State Northridge in the first two
games of a three-game Big West Conference series.
The Dirtbags beat the Matadors, 15-3, Friday and came back
to take a 7-2 victory Saturday. The two victories improved
LBSU's record to 30-18 overall, 11-6 in the Big West. CSUN
fell to 35-15, 15-5.
On Friday, McAnulty had a home run and four RBIs for the Dirtbags,
who led, 7-0, after two innings. Jeremy Reed had four hits
and Kevin Randel three to lead a 17-hit barrage. Reed also
scored three runs and drove in three, and Randel scored four
times and had two RBIs.
Alvarez returned to form Friday, going seven innings, giving
up three hits and one earned run to improve his record to
10-2. Alvarez struck out five, but did walk six.
McAnulty was at it again Saturday, hitting a two-out single
in the sixth that helped ignite a three-run Dirtbag rally
that erased a 2-1 deficit, and launched a two-out, two-run
home run -- his team-leading eighth of the season -- in the
seventh that gave LBSU a 6-2 lead.
The advantage was more than enough for Dirtbag starter Daniel
Eisentrager (8-3), who went seven innings, giving up six hits
and two earned runs while striking out five and walking one.
McAnulty finished the game with two hits, two runs scored
and two RBIs. The senior has now driven in nine runs in LBSU's
last three games.
Brad Davis had a two-run double, Mike Hofius drove in two
runs, and Chris Wright and Nick Covarrubias each scored twice
Saturday for the Dirtbags.
With the victory Saturday, LBSU reached the 30-victory plateau
for the 14-th consecutive season.
