Beach crashes against Waves

Staff reports

Long Beach State won the Big West Conference women's tennis championship this year, but the 49ers were unable to take the next step, losing, 4-1, to Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAA Championships Friday in Palo Alto.

Pepperdine took an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles' point, then built a 3-0 lead after scoring two straight-set victories at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions.

Alena Dvornikova got The Beach's only point with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Veronica Koksova at the No. 3 singles spot, cutting the Waves' lead to 3-1. With matches at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles slots still to be decided, LBSU still had hope.

The hammer finally fell at No. 2 singles when Pepperdine's Monika Horvath, already up a set, rallied from a 6-5 deficit to tie Lindsay Marvel at 6-6 in the second set, then pulled out the match with a 7-3 decision in the tiebreaker.

The victory gave the Waves an insumountable 4-1 lead, and the remaining two matches were halted.

LBSU finished the season with a 21-3 record. Pepperdine went on to lose to host Stanford, 4-0, Saturday.
