Bruins
trump Dirtbags' rally
Staff reports
Long Beach State
rallied from a 5-4 deficit with two runs in the top of the
eighth inning, but UCLA came back with two runs of its own
in the bottom of the inning to pull out a 7-6 nonconference
baseball victory Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Kevin Randel gave the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead with a home run
in the first, and LBSU took a 4-1 advantage on a three-run
blast from Paul McAnulty in the third.
UCLA took the lead in the bottom of the third with four runs.
Two Dirtbag errors contributed to three unearned runs in the
inning.
The scored remained 5-4 until the eighth until Kevin Randel
drove home Chris Genung -- who had a two-out, pinch-hit double
-- to tie the game at 5-5, and LBSU took a 6-5 lead on Bruin
reliever Kevin Jerkens' wild pitch that allowed Nick Orlandos
to score.
The Dirtbag lead was short-lived as Ryan McCarthy and Rashad
Parker connected on RBI doubles in the bottom of the eighth
that gave the Bruins a 7-6 advantage.
LBSU's Jeremy Reed opened the ninth with a single off UCLA
reliever Chris Cordeiro, but Cordeiro retired the next three
Dirtbag batters to earn the save.
The loss Tuesday was the Dirtbags' eighth in the last 12 games
and dropped their record to 28-18. UCLA is 22-28.
LBSU opens a three-game Big West Conference road series against
first-place Cal State Northridge starting Friday at 3 p.m.
