have Forsythe to fill high jump void
By Dwight Flenniken
On-line Forty-Niner
This year, Emily
Forsythe has stepped into her own on Long Beach State track
and field team.
Forsythe helped fill an enormous vacancy in the women's high
jump left by former track and current volleyball star Tayyiba
Haneef.
Forsythe was born in Oklahoma, but spent most of her life
in La Crescenta. She went to high school at Crescenta Valley
High School and is currently a freshman at LBSU, where she
is a standout on this year's track and field squad.
Honors bestowed on Forsythe at Crescenta Valley included being
named All-CIF three years in a row, a three-time Pacific League
Champion, ranked fifth in California her senior year, took
first at the Los Angeles Invitational in 2001 and was named
the best field athlete on her team two years in a row.
LBSU coach Andy Sythe knew there would be a vacancy with the
departure of Haneef. He also knew Forsythe would fit the mold,
but he had no idea how far she would surpass all expectations.
"She is a hard working, tough young lady," Sythe
said. "She has already exceeded her expectation for the
season."
Forsythe was named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week
March 19. Forsythe was one of three track and field athletes
to receive this honor; thrower Jon O'Neil and pole vaulter
Connie Jerz were the others.
At the 2002 Long Beach Invitational, Forsythe took first place
against a very strong field. More recently she placed second
at the UC Irvine meet with a jump of 5 feet, 6 inches. Her
best jump this year was 5-10 1/2.
"She is everything I hoped she would be," Sythe
said. "I knew she would be consistent."
Forsythe has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining and
will be a building block for a strong track and field at LBSU.
