Dirtbags lose series; Wright new hit king

Staff reports

Chris Wright's historic hit wasn't enough to inspire the Long Beach State baseball team, which dropped two of three games against Big West Conference foe Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The host Mustangs beat LBSU Friday, 5-4, and Sunday, 8-2, with the Dirtbags pulling out a 9-6 victory Saturday.

In Friday's game, Paul McAnulty hit a two-run double and Wright had a RBI single that helped give the Dirtbags a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Wright's single gave him 246 career hits, breaking the LBSU all-time record of 245 set by Chuck Lopez during the 1997-2001 seasons.

The Mustangs took some luster off of Wright's accomplishment by eventually taking a 4-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Mike Hofius tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth, but the Cal Poly answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning that stood up.

Saturday was a different story as McAnulty banged out four hits, including two doubles, scored three runs and had two RBIs, Jeremy Reed had three hits, four RBIs and two stolen bases, and starter Abe Alvarez earned his ninth victory of the season by striking out six in five innings.

The Dirtbags trailed, 3-2, before scoring seven unanswered runs to take and insurmountable 9-2 lead.

Cal Poly turned the tables and dominated Sunday's contest, taking a 7-2 lead after three innings and riding staff ace Kevin Correia to the victory. Correia went the distance, giving up five hits, one earned run and striking out three.

Brad Davis provided the only offensive highlight for the Dirtbags, hitting his second home run of the year in the second. Reed was hitless in four at-bats Sunday, snapping his 14-game hitting streak.

The victory Sunday helped Cal Poly (26-24-1 overall, 11-7 Big West) leapfrog LBSU into fourth place in the Big West standings. The Dirtbags are 28-17 overall, 9-6 in the Big West.

LBSU plays a nonconference game tonight at UCLA before embarking on a three-game series on the road against Big West leader Cal State Northridge beginning Friday. The game against UCLA starts at 6 p.m. The Dirtbags beat the Bruins, 4-3, April 2.
