49ers swept, now waiting game begins

Staff reports

A doubleheader sweep Saturday and a loss Sunday proved to be a bitter end to a strong regular season for the Long Beach State softball team.

The 49ers lost, 3-2 and 5-4, Saturday in a doubleheader against host Cal State Northridge, then dropped a 1-0 decision to the Matadors Sunday in Big West Conference play.

In the first game Saturday, The Beach trailed, 3-0, entering the seventh inning. Jessica Smith cut the lead to 3-2 on a two-out, two-run double, but CSUN was able to get out of the jam and record the victory. Panita Thanatharn led the 49ers with three hits in three at-bats.

In the nightcap, LBSU built a 4-0 advantage, but the Matadors tied the game by scoring four runs in the sixth and one in the ninth to pull off the sweep. Smith went four for five in the game, and Christina Zepeda had a two-run single.

The Beach managed only two hits in a 1-0 loss Sunday to the Matadors. LBSU starter Meredith Cervenka (20-8) only gave up four hits, but one was a RBI single to CSUN's Summer Richardson that proved to be the game-winner.

Cervenka also lost both ends of the doubleheader, the first game as a starter, and the second game in relief of Lindsey Knoff.

As a result of the weekend sweep, LBSU ended the regular season on a six-game slide, and now must wait on the NCAA selection committee to see if their postseason dream will become a reality.

With a 35-23 overall record, including 13-11 in the tough Big West, and several quality wins over nonconference opponents, the 49ers should be in the running for an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships. The selections will be made May 12, with first-round action to begin May 16.

CSUN is 26-22 overall and 11-10 in the Big West.
