Beach
to take on Waves in NCAAs
Staff reports
The Long Beach
State women's tennis team, fresh off winning the Big West
championship, will play Pepperdine in the first round of the
NCAA Championships.
The 49ers (21-2) are seeded second in this regional bracket
and play the third-seeded Waves (12-13) at 10 a.m. Friday
at Stanford. Pepperdine has one of the top programs in the
nation despite its record. This is evidenced by The Beach's
0-8 record lifetime against the Waves.
If LBSU advances, it will play the winner of the regional's
other first-round match between No. 1 Stanford (21-1) and
No. 4 Sacramento State (20-3).
In other news, The Beach placed four of its players on the
All-Big West team.
Sophomores Anastasia and Alena Dvornikova were each named
to the first team in singles, and also teamed to make the
first team in doubles. Anastasia Dvornikova was 28-9 (including
the fall season) in singles this season, and Alena Dvornikova
was 27-7. The sisters teamed to go 19-5 in doubles.
Sophomore Lindsay Marvel was named to the second team and
freshman Laura Thomas was named honorable mention. Marvel
and Thomas, the 49ers' No. 2 doubles team, were named to the
second team in doubles.
Marvel had a 23-14 singles record this season, and Thomas
finished 25-6, including a 20-2 mark this spring. The duo
finished with a 23-5 doubles record.

Dirtbags take out frustrations on Lions; split with Mustangs
-- LBSU wiped out a three-game losing streak with a 19-9
shellacking of Loyola Marymount in a nonconference baseball
game Tuesday at Page Stadium in Los Angeles, then split the
first two games of a Big West three-game series against host
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
The 49ers lost to the Mustangs, 5-4, Friday and came back
to win, 9-6, Saturday.
The game Tuesday was far from a pitchers duel on either side.
The Dirtbags banged out 20 hits, while LMU had 19. After a
scoreless first inning, LBSU scored in every other inning
but the ninth, including an 11-run third inning; the Lions
scored in every other inning but the second.
Dirtbag starter Daniel Eisentrager (7-3) gave up 10 hits and
three earned runs in four innings to pick up the victory.
Among the gaudy numbers for the Dirtbags included Nick Covarrubias'
four hits, three runs scored and three RBIs, Paul McAnulty's
two hits, four RBIs and three runs scored, and Chris Genung
and Nick Orlandos with three hits and two RBIs each.
Chris Wright became LBSU's all-time hit leader during the
series with Cal Poly. Look for more information on this and
of all the games against the Mustangs in Tuesday's On-line
Forty-Niner.
Softball drops
two, losing streak at five -- The softball team was swept,
3-2 and 5-4, by host Cal State Northridge Saturday in a Big
West doubleheader.
Jessica Smith had a two-run double in the first game, and
went four for five and drove in three runs in the second game
for the 49ers.

On-line Forty-Niner.
Beach signs
five -- Men's volleyball coach Alan Knipe announced the
signing of five recruits to National Letters of Intent.
The five are:
Duncan Budinger,
a 6-foot-8 middle blocker from Encinitas who was selected
to the 2002 U.S. Junior National Team that will train in Colorado
Springs, Colo.
Tyler Hildebrand,
6-4 setter from Mesa, Ariz. who was co-MVP of the Club Cactus
squad that won Bronze Medal at last year's national championships.
Teddy Liles, 6-8
middle blocker from Tucson, Ariz. who was also a member of
the Club Cactus squad that won Bronze Medal at last year's
national championships.
Beau Peters, a
6-5 setter from Huntington Beach who has been a four-year
starter at Marina High School and was named MVP of the 2001
Junior Olympic Tournament.
Robert Tarr, a
6-6 outside hitter from Rockledge, Fla. who won the U.S.V.B.
Junior Championships for two-man beach volleyball.
Two headed for
LBSU -- Women's water polo coach Rick Azevedo announced
the signing of two recruits to National Letters of Intent.
Cassie Azevedo, a four-time All-CIF player from Long Beach
Wilson High School, and Tara Campbell, the Canadian Junior
National team captain from Baie D'urfee, Quebec, will began
play at the Beach in the fall of 2003.
Cassie Azevedo, Rick Azevedo's daughter, has been a member
of the U.S. National program since 1999 and finished her prep
career as the fourth all-time leading scorer in CIF competition.
Campbell helped lead the Canadian Junior National team to
a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.
The duo will join a LBSU squad that finished with a 19-13
record -- its highest victory total ever -- and is expected
to return six of seven starters.
