Tigers Ball against Beach

Staff reports

Cindy Ball pitched a six-hitter and Boni Kading hit a two-run double to lead Pacific to a 2-1 Big West Conference softball victory over Long Beach State Sunday at the 49er Softball Complex.

The 49ers threatened in each of the first three innings against Ball (24-9), finally pushing across a run in the third when Christina Zepeda scored on a Arleigh Thorp single to give The Beach a 1-0 lead.

Pacific came right back, taking the lead for good when Kading drove home Ball and Barbara Moody with a double.

Ball (24-9) took over from there, allowing only two Beach baserunners the rest of contest. Ball finished with seven strikeouts.

Lindsey Knoff (14-14) started for LBSU, going three innings and taking the loss. Meredith Cervenka went the final four innings for the 49ers.

Long Beach State falls to 35-20 overall and 13-8 in the Big West. Thorp and Jessica Smith led The Beach with two hits each.

Conference-leading Pacific improves to 39-13 and 19-2 in the Big West.

Sunday's game marked the last home game for seniors Smith, Zepeda, Nicole Spencer and Natalie Walker.

The 49ers travel to Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West series beginning Saturday.
