Anteaters pull off sweep

Staff reports

UC Irvine scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out a 11-9 victory over Long Beach State in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday at Blair Field.

The victory completed a three-game sweep for the Anteaters (28-18 overall, 9-3 Big West), who leapfrogged LBSU (26-15, 8-4) into second place in the Big West.

LBSU rallied from 6-1 and 8-6 deficits by scoring three runs in the eighth to go ahead, 9-8. Jeremy Reed tied the game at 8-8 with a two-run single, and Mike Hofius followed with an RBI double that gave the Dirtbags a 9-8 lead -- only the second lead of the series for LBSU.

The lead was short-lived as the Anteaters scored three times in the ninth with the help of two Dirtbag errors and an RBI single from Jon Horwitz, who went five for six with four RBIs and two runs scored in the game.

LBSU opened its portion of the ninth with consecutive singles, but UCI reliever Paul French (4-4) retired the next three batters to close out the game.

Brad Davis had three hits, Reed finished with two hits and three RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, and Kevin Randel hit a three-run home run in the sixth for LBSU, which has lost five of its last seven games.

Tim Hutting had two hits for LBSU, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Dirtbags play a three-game Big West series against host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo starting Friday.
