49ers fourth at MPSFs

Staff reports

The Long Beach State women's water polo team lost to USC, 11-8, Sunday in the third-place game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, concluding a memorable run though the conference playoffs.

The Beach upset Cal Friday to advance to the MPSF semifinals for the first time. The victory was LBSU's first-ever over the Golden Bears.

The 49ers followed with a loss to top-seeded Stanford Saturday. That loss, coupled with the setback Sunday to USC, couldn't dampen this season's achievements.

The 49ers finished the season with a 19-13 overall record, the most victories in school history. The fourth-place finish at the MPSF finals was also the 49ers' highest ever, and a 6-5 mark during MPSF play was also the best ever.

Angelica Garcia had four goals and Ashley Richardson added two against USC, which built a 7-2 lead on its way to the victory.

In other Beach athletics:

O'Neil breaks record -- Senior Jon O'Neil broke a 21-year-old record with a toss of 201-8 in the discus at the UC San Diego Open Saturday to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La. O'Neil broke Greg Seveney's LBSU record of 199-1 set in 1981. O'Neil has also qualified for the NCAAs in the shot put.

Joining O'Neil in San Diego were Michelle Pequinot, who finished second in the discus with a season-best throw of 158-4, and Stephanie Sampson, who placed fourth in the hammer at 185-10.

At the Penn Relays in Philadelphia Saturday, Anthony Colson finished fifth in the triple jump at 48-8 1/2, and Jimmy Camilo finished ninth in the high jump at 16-5.

LBSU's Gladys Iwuaba finished in third place in the women's triple jump at 40-0 3/4 Friday at the Penn Relays.

May honored -- LBSU men's volleyball player Tim May was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Honorable Mention team for his efforts this season.
