Loss
Saturday doesn't damper accomplishments
Staff reports
The Long Beach
State women's water polo run toward the NCAA Final Four ended
Saturday with a loss to Stanford at the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation Championships, but the weekend was far from a disappointment.
The 49ers advanced to the semifinals by upsetting Cal, 8-7,
Friday in the quarterfinals -- the first victory in LBSU history
over the Golden Bears.
Although The Beach lost to Stanford, 10-4, Saturday's semifinals,
LBSU was still guaranteed its best finish in the MPSF Championships.
The 49ers previous highest finish was sixth in 2000.
The Beach trailed Cal, 2-1, in the first quarter, but scored
the next four goals to take a 5-2 lead. The Golden Bears rallied
to cut the lead to 5-4 at halftime, but the 49ers held tough
and took an 8-5 lead on a Drue Wawrzynski goal in the third
quarter.
The Golden Bears fought back to cut the lead to one in the
fourth quarter, but Beach goalie Bri Hawkins (seven saves)
didn't allow another goal and LBSU had its historic victory.
Roberta Stewart scored three goals and Wawrzynski and Angelica
Garcia added two each against Cal.
Top-seeded Stanford proved too much for the 49ers in the semifinals,
jumping out to 4-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
LBSU did cut the lead to 6-4 entering the fourth period before
the Cardinal scored four consecutive goals to close out the
match.
Wawrzynski had two goals against the Cardinal.
The 49ers routed Cal State Northridge, 12-2, in the first
round to advance to quarterfinals.
Wawrzynski led LBSU in that matchup with four goals, and Garcia
and Stacy Black added two goals each.
