Dirtbags drop two to UC Irvine

Staff reports

Long Beach State lost the first two games of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series to UC Irvine Friday and Saturday and beat San Diego Wednesday at Blair Field.

The Dirtbags dropped a 9-3 decision to the Anteaters Saturday and lost to UCI Friday, 5-4, two days after crushing San Diego, 21-3. The results left LBSU with a 26-14 overall record, 8-3 in the Big West.

LBSU fell behind, 3-0, Saturday before cutting the lead to 3-2 on a two-run double from Chris Wright in the fourth inning, but the Anteaters scored once in the fifth, twice in the sixth and three times in the ninth to close the game out.

Paul McAnulty and Tim Hutting had two hits each, and Jeremy Reed scored twice for the Dirtbags. Hutting extended his hitting streak to nine games.

In Friday's game, LBSU rallied from a 5-0 deficit, but came up short.

UCI scored four runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to lead, 5-0. Kevin Randel's two-run single in the fifth cut the Anteater lead to 5-2, and a run-scoring fly ball from Paul Macaluso cut the deficit to 5-3 in the eighth.

UCI reliever Glenn Swanson balked home another Dirtbag run in the ninth, but was able to strike out the last two LBSU batters to close the game.

Hutting led the Dirtbags with three hits Friday.

LBSU played a nonconference game Wednesday, pummeling San Diego, 21-3, at Blair Field. The Dirtbags pounded out 24 hits, scored 10 runs in the first inning and eight in the fourth, and every LBSU starter had at least two hits.

Leading the hit parade Nick Covarrubias, who had three hits, including a grand slam in the first, three runs scored and six RBIs. Wright had two hits and four RBIs, and Reed had three hits and scored three times.

Starter Daniel Eisentrager benefited from the offensive barrage, but could had won with less help. Eisentrager (6-3) stuck out seven in five innings, giving up only one hit and no earned runs before giving way to five Dirtbag relievers.
