Beach wins, play Anteaters for title

By Sarah Duffy
On-line Forty-Niner

OJAI -- The Long Beach State women's tennis team celebrated a 4-2 victory Saturday over Cal State Northridge in the semifinals of the Big West Championships that propelled the team into Sunday's finals.

"We dominated today," said Ana Dvornikova, the No. 1 singles and doubles' player for the 49ers.

Alena Dvornikova agreed with her sister and doubles' partner.

"It was a great day overall," she said.

The Dvornikovas teamed to win, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles Saturday, but CSUN won two matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to take the closely contested doubles' point to start the match.

Despite the slow start in doubles, LBSU coach Jenny Hilt said the 49ers didn't get down.

"We walked out very confident in our singles' matches, and the match isn't over after the doubles' point," Hilt said. "I think that's what the girls were focusing on, every singles' match."

In singles, the 49ers won at positions No. 3 through No. 6. Anastastia Dvornikova was leading in her match against Tereza Simonyan, 7-6, 5-2, when the umpire called the team victory for the 49ers after Cheryl Kindred had won her match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, against Veronika Wagner.

"[CSUN] tested us, and we stood up to the test," said No. 4 singles player Laura Thomas, who has won 19 of the 21 matches this season.

Said freshman Claudia Argumedo, who won her match at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2, against Brittany Bierman: "When you have lots of pressure, you don't play well. So have fun and play good, and you'll take care of business if you play good."

Argumedo has won 11 of 12 matches in straight sets this season, and is 12-2 overall.

The 49ers advanced to the semifinals after beating UC Santa Barbara, 4-1, Friday. The doubles portion of that match was canceled because of rain, so Ana Dvornikova set the tone for LBSU with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Uzma Khan, a player she lost to earlier in the season.

"Ana managed to attack [Khan's forehand] really well," Hilt said, "and I think she did a good job of breaking it down in the second [set]."

The Beach moved on to play UC Irvine for the Big West title Sunday. Results of that match will be in Tuesday's On-line Forty-Niner.
