Men third, women fourth at Big West Championships


Staff reports

Both the Long Beach State men's and women's golf teams finished up play Tuesday in the Big West Championships at Sacramento's Serrano Golf Course, par 72.
 
The men finished third in the team competition with a two-day total score of 292-289-294 -- 875, and the women's squad placed fourth at 322-316-311 -- 949.
 
Individually, Carla Legaspi was the top women's finisher for LBSU, placing third with a two-day total of 75-79-74 -- 228. James Logeman was the top Beach men's finisher, tying for ninth place at 73-74-71 -- 218.
 
Other Beach finishers on the men's side were Chris Gilley (74-70-76 -- 220, tie for 11th), Tyler Mays (73-75-75 -- 223, tie for 16th), Nick Seymour (74-79-72 -- 225, 22nd) and Torey Edwards (72-70-87 -- 229, 29th).
 
Other Beach finishers on the women's side were Marie Louise Juul (84-79-75 -- 238, tie for 12th), Teal Thron (82-79-78 -- 239, tie for 15th) and Heeyoung Cho (81-79-84 -- 244, 19th).
 
UC Irvine won both the men's and women's team titles. The Anteaters men bested second-place Pacific by 13 strokes (853-866), and the UCI women out-distanced second place Cal State Northridge by 17 strokes (917-924).
 
Two Anteaters also took home medal honors. Ryan Armstrong (71-67-71 -- 209) won the men's side in a three-way playoff with UCI teammate Jeff Coburn and Pacific's Matt Hansen, and Stella Lee was the women's winner at 74-73-75 -- 222, four strokes better than Kelley Carlson of CSUN.
