Smith leads 49ers to sweep, sets record

Staff reports

Jessica Smith had two RBIs to help visiting Long Beach State beat Sacramento State, 5-1, Sunday and complete a sweep of the Big West Conference three-game series.

The victory Sunday extended the 49ers' winning streak to four games and gave The Beach a 35-17 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Big West. Sac State falls to 15-25, 4-11.

Smith gave the 49ers a 2-0 first inning lead with a two-run double that scored Arleigh Thorp and Carrie Hamilton. The two RBIs gave Smith 107 in her career, breaking Stacy Van Essen's school record that had stood since 1994.

The Beach built on the lead with a run in the third. The Hornets scored their only run in the third to cut the lead to 3-1, but LBSU put the game out of reach in the fifth after RBI singles from Hamilton and pinch-hitter Kristina McCarty made it 5-1.

Starter Lindsey Knoff made the lead stand up, pitching a five-hitter to win her second game in a row for the 49ers. Knoff's record is now 14-12.

Carrie Hamilton and Christina Zepeda finished with two hits each for LBSU, which hit .476 with runners in scoring position during the series.
