Wahine
ends 49ers season
Seventh-seeded Long Beach State closed its season Saturday
after dropping a 30-26, 30-28, 30-28 decision to No.2-seed
Hawaii in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
men's volleyball playoffs in Honolulu.
Jeff Wootton hit .407 for the match and led LBSU with 14 kills,
and David Lee and Matt Meine added 10 kills each. The Beach,
which finishes the season with a 13-18 record, hit .322 for
the match.
Costas Theorcaridis had 16 kills for Hawaii, which hit.375
for the match. The Wahine moves on to play UC Santa Barbara
in the MPSF semifinals Thursday.

Biorkman signs
-- Megan Biorkman signed a National Letter of Intent to play
tennis for Long Beach State, according to 49er coach Jenny
Hilt.
Biorkman attends University High School in Irvine, where she
has lettered for four years. Biorkman was ranked 161st in
the final 2001 USTA rankings, and was ranked No. 24 by the
SCTA Girls 18 and Under division.
O'Neil honored
-- LBSU track and field athlete Jon O'Neil (shot put, discus,
hammer) was named the Big West Conference's Male Athlete of
the Week Thursday -- the second week in a row O'Neil has garnered
the award.
O'Neil joins Emily Forsythe (high jump) and Connie Jerz (pole
vault) as other Beach track and field athletes honored by
the Big West this year.
