Wahine ends 49ers season

Seventh-seeded Long Beach State closed its season Saturday after dropping a 30-26, 30-28, 30-28 decision to No.2-seed Hawaii in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball playoffs in Honolulu.

Jeff Wootton hit .407 for the match and led LBSU with 14 kills, and David Lee and Matt Meine added 10 kills each. The Beach, which finishes the season with a 13-18 record, hit .322 for the match.

Costas Theorcaridis had 16 kills for Hawaii, which hit.375 for the match. The Wahine moves on to play UC Santa Barbara in the MPSF semifinals Thursday.

In other Beach athletics:

Biorkman signs -- Megan Biorkman signed a National Letter of Intent to play tennis for Long Beach State, according to 49er coach Jenny Hilt.

Biorkman attends University High School in Irvine, where she has lettered for four years. Biorkman was ranked 161st in the final 2001 USTA rankings, and was ranked No. 24 by the SCTA Girls 18 and Under division.

O'Neil honored -- LBSU track and field athlete Jon O'Neil (shot put, discus, hammer) was named the Big West Conference's Male Athlete of the Week Thursday -- the second week in a row O'Neil has garnered the award.

O'Neil joins Emily Forsythe (high jump) and Connie Jerz (pole vault) as other Beach track and field athletes honored by the Big West this year.
