Dirtbags caught in Hurricane

Staff reports

The University of Miami pounded out 23 hits in two games to beat Long Beach State, 9-6 and 10-6, Friday and Saturday in the first two games of a three-game nonconference series in Miami.

The Hurricanes' Kevin Howard ended the first game Friday with a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie. The shot came off Dirtbag reliever Daniel Eisentrager, who took the loss and fell to 5-3 on the season.

LBSU fought back from two deficits to tie the contest. Trailing, 4-2, Dirtbag leadoff man Jeremy Reed hit a two-run home run, his second of the season, in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.

Miami again took the lead by scoring twice in the sixth to make it 6-4, but LBSU came back again and eventually tied the score at 6-6 on Mike Hofius' RBI single in the eighth.

Paul McAnulty and Nick Orlandos had two hits each Friday for the Dirtbags.

In Saturday's game, Miami never trailed, scoring four runs in the first of LBSU starter Jered Weaver (5-3).

The Dirtbags once again mounted a comeback, scoring three times in the second on a two-run single from Tim Hutting and a RBI single from Reed to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Hurricanes put up three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-3.

LBSU did cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth, but that was as close at the Dirtbags would get.

Paul Macaluso, who hit a two-run single in the fifth, Brad Davis and Nick Covarrubias had two hits each Saturday for the Dirtbags.

The defending national champion Hurricanes, unranked this season, improved to 20-18 with the two victories. LBSU, ranked No. 13 in the nation entering the series, fell to 24-12.
