Beach bats catch fire in Sacramento

Staff reports

Long Beach State needed just 10 innings to pound out 22 runs and 23 hits in beating Sacramento State, 13-3 and 9-0, in a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday in Sacramento.

Both games were shortened to five innings after the eight-run mercy rule was put into effect.

Carrie Hamilton was three for three with three runs scored and four RBIs,  Arleigh Thorp went four for four with three runs scored and Jamie Farnworth had three RBIs as the 49ers exploded for 10 runs in the final two innings of the first game.

The Beach led, 3-0, after the first inning on a two-run double from Farnworth and a RBI single from Hamilton, and blew the game open by scoring six times in the fourth to make it 9-0. Hamilton's three-run home run, her second of the season, highlighted the inning.

The Hornets cut the lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the inning, but the 49ers scored four times in the fifth to take a 10-run lead. Beach starter Meredith Cervenka ended the contest with a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth.

Cervenka went five innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs to improve to 20-4 this season.

In the second game, LBSU led, 1-0, after three innings before scoring eight times in the fourth to turn the game into a rout.

Hamilton again was key for The Beach, getting two hits in the fourth, including a two-run single. Cassie Preece also had a two-run single in the inning. Natalie Walker had two run-scoring singles in the eighth and finished the game with three hits, and freshman Lauren Johnson scored twice and had and RBI.

Game two starter Lindsey Knoff (13-12) was the benefactor of the offense explosion in the nightcap. Knoff gave up three hits and struck out three for The Beach, which was 34-17 overall and 12-5 in the Big West after the sweep. Sac State fell to 15-24, 4-10.
