Dirtbags win marathon

Staff reports

Long Beach State built a 8-2 lead, saw the University of San Diego tie the game in the ninth inning, scored two runs of its own in the10th and finally held off the Toreros, 10-9, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in San Diego.

With the score tied, 2-2, in the fifth, The Dirtbags sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times to take an 8-2 advantage.

USD didn't fold, scoring once in the fifth and twice in the seventh before sending the game to extra-innings on a three-run home run of the bat of Jason Marian with two out in the ninth.

The Dirtbags again took the lead by scoring twice in the 10th on a two-run single from Jeremy Reed. The Toreros failed to relent, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning. Eric Verdugo's RBI groundout got USD to within a run, but Neil Jamison was able to induce Tom Caple to fly out to end the game.

Jamison (1-0), who went the final 2 1/3 innings and gave up Marian's home run, got the victory.

Tim Hutting, Chris Wright and Paul McAnulty led the Dirtbags with three hits each, and Paul Macaluso and Reed had two hits each. McAnulty had two RBIs and scored a run and the red-hot Wright, who is 12 for his last 16 plate appearances, scored three times. One of Macaluso's hits was a home run, his first of the year.

The teams combined to strand 35 runners and sent 14 pitchers to the mound, seven on each side.

The Dirtbags play at Miami in a three-game series beginning Friday.
