Wright keys win for hot Dirtbags

Staff reports

Chris Wright went three for three and drove in a key run to lead Long Beach State to a 4-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday at Blair Field.

Wright finished the three-game series with nine hits in 11 at-bats and is now batting .352 on the season.

Starter Jered Weaver (5-2) and Nate Beucler combined to hold the Gauchos to one earned run. Beucler, who was named Big West Pitcher of the Week Monday, went the final four innings, holding the Gauchos scoreless while striking out four to earn his first save of the season.

The Dirtbags trailed, 2-1, when Wright hit a run-scoring fly ball in the fourth that tied the game at 2-2. LBSU took the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Paul McAnulty and a RBI single from Brad Davis.

LBSU has won eight of its last nine games and stands in first in the Big West at 8-1, one game ahead of second-place Cal State Fullerton. The Dirtbags are 23-10 overall. UCSB is 16-21 overall, 3-6 in the Big West.

The Dirtbags play at the University of San Diego today at 2:30 p.m. before traveling to Florida to take on national power Miami in a three-game series starting Friday.
