Cervenka,
Smith lead Beach over UCSB
Staff reports
Meredith Cervenka
tossed a one-hitter and Jessica Smith drove in the winning
run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Long Beach State
beat UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, in a Big West Conference softball
game Sunday at the 49er Softball Complex.
Cervenka is now
19-4 in her first season at The Beach and won two of three
games in the series. The only hit the freshman allowed Sunday
was a leadoff single in the third from UCSB's Chantal Pershing.
Gaucho starter
Loren Thornburg was equally effective, holding the 49ers without
a hit until Cassie Preece led off the sixth with a single.
The Beach had three hits on the day.
The game was scoreless
after 6 1/2 innings when Arleigh Thorp led off the seventh
with a single. A walk and an error loaded the bases for The
Beach, and Smith's single scored Thorp with the winning run.
LBSU is now 32-17
overall and 10-5 in the Big West this season. UC Santa Barbara
is 18-27 and 5-7.
The 49ers begin
a three-game series at Sacramento State Saturday.
