Softball splits
with UCSB

Cassie Preece connected
on a single that scored pinch runner Kristina McCarty in the
ninth inning and gave Long Beach State a 2-1 victory in the
first game of Big West Conference doubleheader Saturday at
the 49er Softball Complex.
The 49ers were shutout in the second game, 2-0, and fell to
31-17 overall, 9-5 in the Big West. UCSB improved to 18-26
and 5-6.
Preece's RBI made a winner of Meredith Cervenka, who went
the entire nine innings, giving up four hits and striking
out seven and improved to 18-4 on the season.
Carrie Hamilton had a RBI double in the first inning that
scored Christina Zepeda to give The Beach a 1-0 advantage.
The Gauchos took the second game on the strength of a two-run
home run from Julia Tamai in the fourth inning and the four-hit
pitching of Katie Junge.
Lindsey Knoff (12-12) picked up the loss for the 49ers, going
the distance and giving up three hits.
