Staff reports

Long Beach State won three matches Saturday and advanced to the championship bracket of the Long Beach Invitational women's water polo tournament played at the Campus Pool.

LBSU, which had a 15-9 record following the three victories, opened with a 14-4 win over UC Santa Cruz before beating Arizona State, 15-3. The Beach closed its day with a 14-6 defeat of Cal State Bakersfield.

Angelica Garcia led The Beach with eight goals on the day, and Roberta Stewart added five. Nine different LBSU players scored in the first two games, and seven in the final contest. The 49ers used four different goalies during the matches, with Bri Hawkins leading the pack with 10 saves.

LBSU advanced to play San Diego State in a semifinal match Sunday with the winner playing for the title against the winner of USC/UC San Diego. The losers of the semifinals played for third-place. Results of all matches Sunday will be in Tuesday's edition of the Forty-Niner.

In a nonconference match Thursday, Stewart scored with nine seconds left in the second overtime as The Beach beat visiting Loyola Marymount, 7-6.
