UC Irvine ending
the Long Beach State women's tennis team's 16-match win streak
by scoring a 5-2 win over the 49ers in a Big West Conference
match Saturday at the 49er Campus Courts.
The 49ers fell to 18-2 overall and 7-1 in their Big West Conference
matches, while UCI improved to 15-6 overall and moved to 7-0
in conference matches. The Anteaters now have an 11-game winning
streak.
Both teams will play in the Big West Conference Tennis Championships,
which begins April 25 in Ojai. The Beach will be the No. 2
seed and UCI No. 1 as a result of Saturday's regular season
finale.
LBSU coach Jenny Hilt said the 49ers have a tougher draw now
that they are the second seed.
"[Cal State] Northridge is looking to be on our side
[of the draw], and they're playing good," Hilt said.
"At this point, I don't think we can really guarantee
anything. We've got to just take it one match at a time, and
Northridge is definitely going to be an obstacle for us."
The Anteaters swept all three doubles matches to earn the
match's first point and clinched the victory by winning at
the No. 1, 4, 5, and 6 singles spots. The No. 1 singles matchup
between Jonni Seymour of UCI and LBSU's Anastasia Dvornikova
continued on to three sets before Seymour closed it out at
7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3.
"At the beginning, we were looking really good,"
Hilt said. "We needed to step up ... [but the 49er players]
just weren't playing their best tennis. When we have 4-1 and
3-0 leads, which we had in some of those positions, and don't
capitalize on it, that makes a big difference."
