Beach roundup

49er close with victory

Staff reports

Jeff Wootton's 21 kills lifted Long Beach State to a 26-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27 victory over host UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match Thursday that closed the regular season.

Wootton led four Beach players in double figures kills. Scott Touzinsky had 14, Tim May 13 and David Lee added 12 as the 49ers improved to 13-17 overall and 9-13 in the MPSF. The Gauchos fell to 16-10, 11-10.

After dropping the first game, LBSU hit .533 in the second to tie the match and continued to hit well in the third (.344) and fourth (.400) games to take the victory.

Mark Ekins had 72 assists for The Beach, who hit .421 for the match.

LBSU moves on to the MPSF Tournament, where it will play second-seeded Hawaii in Hawaii Saturday the first round. The 49ers are seeded seventh.

In other Beach athletics:

Several 49ers shine in Tempe -- Jon O'Neil finished second in the shot put with a toss of 63-1 and Rashaad Johnson ran a lifetime best mark of 46.94 in the 400 meters to finish 11th at the Sun Angel Invite in Tempe, Ariz.

Other Beach highlights included Connie Jerz finishing third in the pole vault (12-5 1/2), Emily Forsythe finishing fifth in the high jump (5-7), Cory Loebl's fourth-place finish in the discus (175-8 1/4), Frank Rodriguez fifth-place showing in the javelin (206-8 1/4) and Matt Bates finishing sixth in the 800 meters with a personal-best 1:52.28.

Beach signs three -- The Long Beach State women's volleyball team completed its 2002 recruiting class by signing Kerstin Doering (Oberschleissheim, Germany), Melanie Fleig (Villingen-Schoenningen, Germany) and Raimi Mitchell (Buena Park) to National Letter of Intents for the upcoming season.

Robin Miramontes, who signed a National Letter of Intent in the fall, walk-on Heather Laundato and Jen Bowman, a transfer from Northern Illinois, will also join the 49ers for the 2002 season.
