Weathers fine for Dirtbags

Staff reports

The Long Beach State baseball team scored a 5-3 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount at Blair Field Tuesday, and while the win won't register as the most important for the Dirtbags this season, it was far from inconsequential to Mike Weathers.

The victory was the 300th as a head coach in Weathers' career, who is in his first year as the top man for the Dirtbags and 12th as a head coach overall.

Weathers was previously a head coach at Utah (1980-81) and Chapman (1984-1992) before coming to LBSU in 1993 as an assistant. Weathers is now 300-289 in his career.

Nate Beucler (1-1) earned his first win of the year for LBSU, pitching a career-high seven innings, walking none and striking out seven.

The Dirtbags managed only five hits in the game and scored all of their runs in the first three innings on RBI doubles from Todd Jennings and Nick Covarrubias and run-scoring fly balls from Paul McAnulty and Mike Hofius.

Beucler and relievers Josh Alliston and Carlos Muniz made the lead stand up, with Muniz pitching a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

The victory was also the sixth in a row for the No. 14 Dirtbags, who are now 21-9 on the season and open a three-game Big West Conference series against UC Santa Barbara Friday at Blair Field.

LMU is 14-20.
