opinion: our view

Students must vote today

The Associated Students Inc. elections are upon us at Cal State Long Beach and now is the time for us to implore all students to vote.

Last year only 10 percent of students voted in the elections, a rather deplorable turnout. We hope that this year will be better.

Most students at CSULB either don't know or don't care what A.S.I. does and that is understandable at a school with a large commuter population such as ours. But students need to realize that A.S.I. really does a lot for this university.

That most important thing that students can do this week is to take an extra five minutes out of their day and vote at one of the eight stations located around campus. You might not even know about any of the candidates. Most of us don't either, but that shouldn't stop you.

Most candidates have the same ambitions and good and bad traits so that whomever is elected is more or less a moot point.

We think the reason that the majority of the student body feels so apathetic toward their student government is not that they don't know or don't care about what A.S.I. does but that they can't see it.

Wayne Stickney-Smith has been a completely non-visible entity as A.S.I. president. During last year's elections, he could be found everywhere on campus, stumping for votes and glad-handing with students.

This year we are seeing very similar activity from new candidates. But the big question is will the new president disappear into the University Student Union like Stickney-Smith?

The answer lies in the hands of the student body.

The editorial board of the On-line Forty-Niner urges all students to make for the polling places and make a difference. The prospects for a new student government are both intriguing and frightening. The student population holds in its hands, the future of the university.

Students must use their power to ensure that future is bright.
