Letter
to the editor
I am writing this letter in response to the article "Apathy,
cynicism alive and kicking" in yesterday's newspaper.
In this article, Alex Roman seems to make the general point
that voting in student government elections is not important.
In actuality, $94 of every student's tuition goes directly
to Associated Students Inc. A.S.I. then divides these fees
into separate entities and directs this money back to the
students. By voting, essentially you are choosing who represents
you and the money you're spending. Mr. Roman is correct when
he says that generally only 10 percent of students vote. This
is unfortunate and students must realize that you can change
these statistics by voting today.
Roman also states that I, Oron Maher, a candidate for A.S.I.
President, take student government too seriously. Roman is
correct, why wouldn't anyone running for student body president
take student government seriously?
My passion to enhance Cal State Long Beach into a new level
of excellence is a quality that is an essential ingredient
for any effective campus leader. Next year, I would like to
create a Beach Pride Community at CSULB. I will do this by
focusing my administration on four key areas: continuing the
development of Beach Pride, strengthening campus programming
and media, developing CSULB's relationship with the City of
Long Beach and creating a more academically encouraging environment
on campus.
Students should take the time to vote today. The leadership
of the A.S.I. president directly affects campus life. I feel
I'm the most qualified candidate to be your A.S.I. president.
Why not vote for the most determined candidate?
Go Beach!
Oron Maher
